glad to hear you are ok, i live about 25 miles from the dragon and ride it quite a bit and beleive me that place can bite u in a heart beat, u a very lucky on average they land 2-3 helicopters on any given sat. or sunday to fly people to the hospital, have been several people killed on that road also. did u hang any parts on the tree of shame at deals gap? we were going to ride the dragon that day but decided to stop by smokey mtn. harley instead, john boy and billy were there for a barbque cook off contest and a concert. like i said glad you are ok, the bike can be repaired or replaced your life can not be.

I had a fender I could have hung on the tree of shame, but I figured the insurance company would want all the evidence, so we brought it home with the bike.

I have gotten an incredible deal on a well accessorized 2005 Road Glide; that I purchased from another forum member. The motor has recently been upgraded to a 98" RevPerf with gear drive Andrews TW-37's, head work etc...:D

With the payoff for repairs to my old bike, it was only a $7000.00 loan to get the newer bike. I plan to rebuild the front end on my bike myself and I'm hoping my brother will buy it from me. He has shown some interest.

The new bike is in black cherry pearl, which my wife loves, but the light conditions in these photos don't do it justice...as any of you familiar with this paint know. These are pictures from the previous owner. I need to change out a few items, get it polished and get some pictures in the sun yet.

i can see a couple of things your going to have to get used to.....first the non turning fairing, and the lightness of the front end.....i didnt like the stationary fairing, kinda threw me off when turning.....but that is me. very nice looking bike, glad you were able to swing the deals you did!!!!! good luck and have fun with it!!

    Seahag,
Glad things are working out for you and getting a bike!! I looked at the bike you got....liked the cost, and the options...then I saw the fairing and it wasn't for me. I know lots of guys that ride it and LOVE it! I am with chuck...was not able to adjust to the fairing not moving. Probably one of the many reasons I don't have a goldwing either!! Happy riding!!!

The fairing bit never really bothered me. I have a friend with a 2003 road glide that I've put maybe 100 miles on and I liked it as well...so I knew what I was getting. The handling is a little lighter and better IMO than the fork mounted batwing fairings.

With the fairing farther away, you do get more air behind the fairing hitting you...which can be nice in the summer I suppose. My bike also came with the hard fairing lowers, which will be really nice when the weather turns cold in October and for early spring riding.

Another great add-on with this bike is the moto-lights mounted down low on the brake calipers. They add so much at night its incredible and I don't think I'll ever want another bike without them. BUT I REALLY LOVE THE CRUISE CONTROL!!!...Which really makes this a great bike.

    seahag,
i use to be the owner of that gas station, you are talking about. my ex-wife and i received the motel/ gas station/ restaurnt/ country store as a wedding gift from her dad,we owned it from march 1986 to june of 1988, when we took it over it was run down and in very poor shape, we put in new gas pumps, redid the 16 room motel, and added a restaurnt, at that time it was a dry county, and we hauled in beer from merryvelle, to sell to the locals, wonder if the trailer house is still next door???? it was located inbetween the store and motel rooms.....thats were we stored the beer!!! i use to close down every day at 3 pm during the warm months just to go riding...and everybody knew what i was doin, if you were out of gas, sorry about your luck!!!! you would just have to wait till i got back .....lol wich was all the time...... i must tell ya i thought i was a good rider till we moved there, i found out quickly there was a lot to learn about mountain riding, i was lucky enough to have a freind who was a robbinsville police officer, take the time and actually show me the ropes of riding moutain roads.

i am now on my second wife, and north carlina is just a faded memeory, but the good times i had while living there were many, small world that someone would actually know where deals gap is.........you have 3 roads that meet, and 20 miles in any direction before you see any thing. wonders if they still haul the down riders to bryson city??? 50 miles from nowhere........

I was lucky enough to not need hauling anywhere. I have a bunch of new pink skin on my forearm, but that is all. Talked with the other party's insurance company today and they tell me he also came out with hardly a scratch...so we were both incredibly lucky.

How cool is it that you used to run that place. That being in the middle of nowhere is a problem though when you need police/ambulance in a hurry...no cell phone service out there. It took four hours just to get a trooper to the site and clear up the paperwork so we could all leave.

I'm hitting Deal's Gap on the way home. I'm doing a quick run. I meant to do it last year when I rode the Blue Ridge Parkway, but I didn't look into it before I left and thought it was part of the Blue Ridge Parkway. I kept wondering when I was going to hit it and then realized I'd blown right by. Doh. I'll be loaded down, but I expect it will still be fun. I'll remember not to push it.

Wow...just read some of your blog. It's a pleasure to meet you Abby. You are one courageous person doing a big trip like that solo. I've done several 200-400 mile days solo, but 'real' distance trips I like the comfort of having another rider along in case I have any problems. Looks like your trip is well thought out. I wish you a safe and happy journey; and please be careful on the dragon. I just read another post this week about three more riders being killed there last weekend I believe. Your best bet is to ride it during the week. The weekend traffic is very high.

Is your cross country trip going to bring you through Minnesota at all?

I just read this. I rode through MN yesterday and this morning. I spent the night in Jackson, MN last night.

Thanks for your comments. People say I'm brave. I'm really just crazy. I've never had a lot of sense when it comes to doing things that seem like fun.

I think I'll be at Deal's on Thursday. I was thinking that it was a good thing that I'll be there during the week when I read this thread. I'll be loaded down too, so I'll need to be conservative.
