scratch that 80". i would only lose compression. it is a 74" kit. hey...it was good enough back then. if i want speed, i'll put a 125 in a sporty.

Yup, 8.5 to 1 is the stock compression for a 74", same as mine. And you're right - 74" is fine if you don't hot rod it. My 74 stocker weighs less than a Sporty and pulls good enough for me!

tore down ready for new top end. was pleased that i did not have to remove cases from frame.
found my tranny problem...stupid timing mark on shifter gear. i put it together the same way, and had the same results. then i found another timing mark. the one i used was a chamfered tip, but found that the mark was in the top center of another tooth. 100% sure this time. sucks that it cost me the time to remove primary, clutch, etc. but hey, this is getting easier and faster...:p

when i pulled the heads off, both pistons had oil laying around the edges. i think the teflon valve guide seals were junk to start with...

I dought it was the valve seals but you are putting on different heads so it doesnt matter.
How did the head gaskets look? dry or wet?

gaskets between jugs and heads looked good as new. i have not split the rocker covers from the heads yet.

went ahead and ordered new 22 tooth sprocket for tranny. i had chain tension issues, loose and tight depending on position. the chain is a fairly new diamond o-ring that passed the compression/extension test.

Sounds like the valve seals and/or guides were leaking. Those are being replaced. Check your ring installation carefully and you should be good to go this. :gah:

found a broken valve guide seal in each head. i believe i will rebuild all of the top end next year, then look for some cases and internals.
didn't get it all done today...i worked all day saturday...emergency=nice pay.

Alex the Dog has recommended Viton type valve seals to me when I rebuild both my heads this winter. Also C6300 bronze type valve guides. I'm taking his advice . . . .:)

    You talk to dogs? :roflmao:
My bikes have Teflon seals. I'm not sure if they are the same or different.
    Maybe someone else can advise?

i think that is the brand of those seals...and instructions did not say anything about guide machine work. it does look as though they got crunched and broke.

got my new starter relay today, solenoid comes tomorrow. still don't see how it shorted out that bad, the ignition circuit breaker is doing its job.

Some of the solenoids out there are cheap junk like "ACCELL". And just b/c it's chrome doesn't mean it's better quality.

oh, soooo pissed today. installed new solenoid. a lil hard to start, but she did. let her idle, 30 psi oil pressure. put my helmet and glasses on and.....oil flowing from my new rocker cover gasket on the front head. all over my exhaust, breather cover etc. i torqued all the nuts to 13 ft. lbs. sm says 12-15. wtf ??? went ahead and shut her down. got to drive to big detroit tomorrow. will be monday until i can get back into it. these are brand new heads, and great mating surfaces on the rocker covers. james gaskets and proper torque. argghhh...:banghead: almost makes me want a gas-n-go bike, but, wait...nope. i still love my shovel.

You'll find the problem, dougsRK aka the Valdez just wouldn't stop leaking
on the back rocker box, even finally got a new set and it helped but eventually would
drip, wtf, we'd fix one leak and find another.

Little black sillycone around the rear box on install and we at least
built a dam that stopped the leak..
