    wow...a whole month since i've posted anything...sorry.
it's been a fairly productive month though.
wheels are back from the powdercoater, but jp cycles shorted me
1 outer seal spacer, so i cannot get them mounted nand balanced.
i will post pics of those badboys once done.

tore the engine down, good thing i drink so much coffee, those plastic
containers are all full and labeled for internals.

lets start with the cam...it says HT 112, poor thing has a rough lobe.
i really don't want to re-install, but they are roller lifters. please chime in.

i thought i had a bent valve, turns out the shaft was just so coated with
burnt oil it didn't want to move. new valve guide seals should help. why
doesn't james include those in thier gasket set?? they have a bazillion
o-rings that i have not run into yet.

tappets and rocker boxes seemed ok, thinking of skimping on the powdercoat
of the cases...chromed boxes would look good on top.

s&s oil pump got re-built today. buffed off the jb weld, found a small crack
underneath. i sealed it with jb weld from the inside. looks good now.

here is the biggest concern i found...i cannot believe the bearings were
still intact...this is supposed to be a polished surface, ain't it ?

anyway...that's where the project is to date.

    merry Christmas to you all.

by the way...i am planning on a hot kit of some kind in a few years. so i am
trying to just re-build as was for now. still concerned over cam though.
i wouldn't mind a cam upgrade, but don;t want to have to change other stuff
    now. suggestions would really help.

have a great new year also.

I have never seen a cam like that. Is that something common for the shovel or did something just go completely wrong??? WOW!

    cam is trash is understatement..

Lifters got to go as well, might as well
spiff up the stuff that moves that you can
bearings etc, you don't want to go back in
to fix it after its done

yeah...cam is now a paperweight. didn't know on the lifters.
just not sure which cam to go with.
pinion shaft is being purchased also.
the sprocket shaft spacer was installed backwards
according to my service manual. more than half of the bolts
on this engine had little or no torque...:wtf:
anyway, poor thing should feel a lot better soon.

best i can come up with, is someone slapped in a hot cam that may
or may not have needed extra engine work.
gonna check on stock and bolt-in cams.
buddies cams were used, and showed some signs of wear, so
e-bay is now getting a glance.

not much to show for a saturday,
but i am pleased with the results.
    i don't think i'll be spending $385 for
    the chrome rocker boxes. yea...
that will about cover the cam and lifters.

those look great!!!!!!!! if ya want to try to keep the shine, use a high heat clear to seal them.....not as good as chrome, but will save ya a lot of time on cleaning them.....

Well one looks great :) what did you use to clean it ? Looks almost new do the sealant like chuck mentioned & the gas tank will hide most of your hard work

was wondering about the high temp clear...will do.
120 and 220 grit dry sand. 800 wet sand.
2 stages of buffing compound...did wonders.

on another note...is it really needed to check
the angles on a crane cam ? or is it pretty much
quality control gospel. i read about some marks
being off as much as a tooth or maybe two on
    some cams.

hey...happy new years to you all !

That rocker box looks great - the other one (you haven't done yet) looks to have some rough spots in it. Hope you can get them out. I took my shovel out yesterday for it's first ride. Motor's been rebuilt to stock (1200cc's) specs - more than enough oompf for me! Looking forward to seeing your bike finished.

thanks jb, read your post...looks great.

the finished rocker box looked pretty rough too,
several large nicks and scars. it will take awhile,
but i will get it to match.

got my pistons cleaned up today. also 1 head done
and ready for machine shop. get valve grind, and would
like to get it shaved. need some tech info on gasket
sizes and allowable shave. i also got the cases ready
    for paint.

shop was putting my order in for the crane cam tomorrow,
but after more research, i have decided on an andrews
    ab grind.

Keep it mild and you'll have more time to ride.

    That one looks good,
lotta work shining that stuff up

I'd agree a good high temp clear would
    be a good idea...

I hope to keep my polished & chrome parts reasonably shiny just using BlueMagic polish. So far has worked well . . . . does take about an hour to do the whole bike, but I don't mind - got the radio and some brews and sometimes company . . . .
