opened tranny...what a pill. two stripped out heads on long screws. easy out removed one, twisted the others neck off. had to twist top cover off until it cleared screw...sooo much fun packed into one day. gears look great, so i am not going to take it all the way apart. just replace gaskets and main seals. found that the retainer clip on my kicker shaft was laying inside, thrust washer was also laying in there. i guess the kicker came out and someone just pushed it back in, glad i didn't lose it during last season.
oil tank is sandblasted and repainted...looks very nice.
hope for tranny and primary install within the next two weeks.
roads are full of hogs already...getting jumpy...

Yo, JB how did you fix the crankcase seal leak? Does it still leak? I have the same issue. I put on a belt drive so the primary wouldn't leak and now the mofo leaks engine oil. WTH? Must be coming from the crank shaft.

Tommy, I had 2 leaks that had to be fixed. When running an open primary you have to have the crankshaft seal installed with the spring facing INWARD. Mine was set up for enclosed primary (spring facing OUTWARD). Also, I installed it a tad deeper (1/8") than usual so the seal lips would contact new metal on the spacer. Mine was a bit scratchy.
After I did that I still had a leak, but not as bad. Had to go back in and found that the 2 retaining screws were missing that hold the stator plug in place. The retainer was missing also. So, I got those parts (put some thread sealer on the screws because the holes go all the way thru the crankcase), put 'em in and . . . no more leaks - at least around the crankshaft area!

    Thanks.
    What a pain in the...
I'll have to pull the clutch hud, starter, solenoid, jackshaft, inner primary and stator cover to get access to that seal.
How did you pull out the existing seal?

Yeah, that's a bummer for sure getting to that seal, especially since you have a starter. I don't mind too much working on The Beast - I knew it was inevitable with shovels. Once you're in there, don't forget to check and be sure your retainer screws aren't leaking first. They are found under the stator and to the left. Your crankshaft seal might be okay - it just might be the retainer screws that are leaking. If it's the screws, all you have to do is back them out, clean 'em, put some thread sealer on 'em and screw them back in. Use a Q-tip to clean the threaded holes. LIke I said, mine didn't have any. Got the kit from Harley dealer for under $10.

    Hope this helps.

You have to drill 2 holes into the edge of the seal - be careful the bit (1/8" or so) doesn't go in too far. Then screw in a sheet metal screw into each hole. I put a pair of vice grips on each screw and pulled the seal out. BTW, I did this 3 times on mine so I got pretty good at it!

It looks great! I had to end up painting the cover on mine because the chrome was in such bad shape. Are you going to replace all the bearings and bushings?
