When I was at the INdy shop we ground the end that the pin was braded and punched it out, then put a master link in it .
Those metric bikes wear out chains like crazy when I was there.

Got the carb and ignition on yesterday. Just need to time it and get the chain on and it should be good to go. It's not gonna get out of the 30s for several days, so I guess there's no hurry, though I can start her up in the shop and run her through a few idle heat cycles. I'll break her in as per usual break in procedure after that. Just a mile or two. Cool down. Then a little farther. Cool down. Gradually build up to 50 miles or so. Cool down. 100 miles, no faster then 50 - 55 MPH. Cool down. After that, ride normally. I just need to get the rings seated. Cometic says heads don't need to be "retorqued" with their gaskets.

Now, about the chain. I guess can use vice grips to squeeze the link together. I think I remember doing that with my old chain. The peening operation would be best done with an extra set of hands so I will get Mac the Wife to hold the anvil in place while I peen. She doesn't know I've recruited her yet! I think Tattoo has an anvil I can use. BTW, with the master link I have, you can't use a c clip with it.

Tattoo also says to use a center punch first, and then a few good raps with a heavy hammer. I'll make sure I don't get the link too tight.

Boys, I'm sorry there's no pics, but I'm darned if I can figure out how to post 'em.

What happened? did you forget? I remember seeing pix from you when you were building it. Look for the paperclip above the text box. hit that. then a screen comes up and you can "browse" to you file, folder, photo and clip on it twice. Then look for the "upload" in red. Hit that the close that screen. You should have that photo attached now. Do a "preview" of your post. You should see the photo.
If my rememberer remembers, this is how it's done.

Ps. A clip on the master link is fine. I used to use the vise grip procedure on my performance Japanese bikes without a problem. just make sure the clip is facing the correct position (closed end towards front of bike when it's on the top run when looking at it from the left side of bike ( like this- c ). I used to have a habit of over 100mph a lot and saw 140-160 too, no clip failures.
(I never said I was smart!)

Even if you had a steel bar or if you have a small sledge hammer and lay it on it's side you can lay the chain on...you could give Mac the wife the day off;) then maybe she can show you how to post pics:D

I have a different laptop now and neither one of us can figure it out. I'll try what fatboy said and see what happens.

Today I have to get my truck repaired and will be in town most of the day, and besides, it's really cold - at least for around here. Only in the teens now. I'm gonna wait for warmer temps before doing anything else to the bike . . .

You know you got that "Freeze-out" clothing??? I had picked up the jacket with the zip off sleeves last winter. The other day I went for a ride with it on over a thin fleece turtleneck and under my custom leather jacket. It was 36 degrees. Man it kept me warm!

I'll tell ya, I wish I was down in FLA now. Stayed real cold all day yesterday here. I have to take my antique f-150 back in when they get the part. It's one of those crossover tubes that hooks up to the back of the motor. Guy had a heck of a time finding one in the catalog. It's on backorder.

Maybe I'll venture out to my shop and time the beast and try to get her started. Should be intersting kicking over SAE 50 in freezing temps.:)

Will have to wait til Saturday to drag Mac the Wife out to the shop to help me with the chain. She says I will owe her a box of cigars - yup, my wife is a cigar smoker, boys! Tough ol' gal.;)

I would get a regular master link. If your chain stretches or if you got to take off the rear wheel you will be glad you did.
Good luck trying to start your bike in that cold weather. My shovels don't wanna start if it's below 50. I run 70 weight down here in the hot climate.
