I've never had much luck using WD40 checking for an air leak, carb cleaner works much better. if you didn't use a little lubricant when you installed the carb it may not have sealed up tight, i use a light layer of vaseline or other grease type lubricant on the inside of the rubber boot before I install the carb. (Here's the fun part) lubricant the rubber boot stick carb in and turn slightly to line up the cover mounting slots.
OR you damaged the acceletor gasket when you installed.

No, you do not absolutely need to change the main. Go in increments so you know how the changes you made affected your issue. :D

S.O.B update, after one busted knuckle, near stripping of pilot jet while attempting removal on bike, carb came off AGAIN... Already has a effin 45 in it!>-{ do I go right to a 48?

No...a 48 pilot is way to big for a 883...when you covered the mouth of the carb and it ran good is a sign of an air leak...did you try this method for finding intake leaks

changed out mani gaskets since they did test bad and it revs or way better but still don't come off bottom end clean unless you role throttle on real slow, think its real close. Gonna exchange 45 pilot for 46 or next size up.

good deal on the intake gaskets , now just one step at a time on the jets ,& you'll be there in no time at all
