Good you got the air leaks cleared up... now you have to set the idle mix ...here's a good explanation how to do it Harley Davidson Carburetor Performance TuningI think what your problem is now is the needle jet,it controls off idle to 3/4 throttle...you have 3 options there...CV performance Basic Stage 1 kit, the N65C needle from Harley (HD part #27094-88) if still available or shim your stock needle with a thin washer.
Basic Stage 1 kit is the way I'd go...Stage 1 Carb Tuner Kit

When setting your idle mix if it runs best with the screw less than 1 turn out you need a smaller pilot jet if you have to go more than 3 turns out you need a larger pilot jet.

ok heres the real toughy! i was told when i bought the bike that it had the 1200 kit but so far i see no indication that the heads have been off, especially with the 160 jet it had in it, would i guy even believe a 1200 would run on that?

it would probably run.....as long as ya took it easy with no wot. that 160 feeds the main circuit and as long as ya didnt out run it, it should run.

A 160 main? That is small even for an 883? :wtf: Stock those come with a 170 at least don't they? I am sure that mine was a 170 when I converted it.

Thought book said stock was 160 and that's what it had so figured it was stock but low speed was 45 and book says its supposed to be 40 or 42.

I'd say your bike was pretty leaned out... I'd guess the previous owner did the 1200 conversion, changed the pilot from 42 to 45 and called it good...JB reports about 50MPG's with his 883/1200 conversion so it could be possible...it would run pretty hot ,but I guess possible...I think once you get the CVP Deluxe kit and dialed in right you'll be golden....keep us posted:devil:

Yeah my bike is pretty hopped up and I am getting about 51-53 depending on how I ride it. If you really want to know if it is a 1200 kit, take the rocker boxes off and measure the bore. It will be at least 3.5 inches if it is a 1200. You are way lean if you are getting 60 mpg. Let us know.

Yea I'm sure I was real lean before and once I replaced leaking accel pump it ain't getting ANY gas. Makes it tough to know what parts I need when I'm not sure about cc's, didn't want to have to pull heads off to confirm but sounds like the only way. Thinking come winter we'll be finding out for sure! For now stage one kit for 883 is on thee way, figured only difference ure the jet sizes included and worst case I have to buy a couple diff jets...or I'm screwed and hafta try and return kit:/ whatever I'm gonna get her ass straightened out once I get that kit sure and I'll be braggin about it to you guys the minute I do! Three things always worth a thought for a finicky carb'd bike:

    - How old is the gas in the tank?

    - What was your enrichener/chole set at?

    - Was the fuel petcock on?
