Mine used to shovel the driveway then I pregged her up, and had to buy a snowblower! Now I'm on snowblower #2, still on wife #1. New snowblower is likely cheaper than a new wife at this point...

New O.E. service manual came in today. I might still have no skills, but at least I have information now. Now when I take stuff apart it might actually run again when I'm done!

Factory Service Manual is the best tool in the box...Parts Catalog is a close second, not only has part numbers but has exploded diagrams showing the order of assembly, that way you don't have any unnecessary left over parts, springs, clips or screws:cool:

But I love left over parts. Best way to get the parts bin stocked.

So I got my replacement cases, rocker boxes, rocker box covers, and front pulley cover, all in nice shiny chrome. All were in even better shape than I had hoped, but... noticed two things. 1st: Rocker boxes from the 2007 have a different cover design as compared with the 2004 boxes at the gasket. Parts guy says same part number, but the 2004 gasket is a wee bit different than the 2007. Should be no issue as I am using the 07 boxes and covers, so I just need to reorder gaskets for newer model. 2nd: Here is where I have a problem. Shifter shaft hole in primary cover in 04 is smaller than the 07. Was there a shaft design change and can I get shaft bushing and seal that will allow my small shaft to fit the larger hole in the 07 cover? And can the guy using my old 04 cover drill it to take his shifter shaft bushing and seal size?

Ha Ha! Just found out H-D increased shifter shaft diameter in 2006. Yay! Now I get to take apart more #$@!!. I'll have to see if the other guy wants to swap my shifter shaft for his for this to go further, I guess.

Ok. So I've skimmed the factory service manual from cover to cover, and I can't see where it talks about engine timing marks. It shows the cams with cover off, all in alignment, and it says to rotate engine to TDC compression on the cyl you are removing the rocker box from, but I would think there must be a blind plug on the block to see the flywheel mark if the cam cover is on and you can't see them at the time. I can't find where this is. What is the best way to rotate the engine, with the primary cover off and using the nut on the crank?

I put it in 5th or 6th and rotate the rear tire to get the crank to TDC

If you have the primary or belt off, then turning the crank by hand is your only choice
