Sorry BigTommy, didn't mean to be irreverent. With mama on the back seat, that RoadKing will give you many more good memories when you have the time to go. But 500 miles might be pushing it for her comfort.

No offense taken, Alex. With no mama in my life right now, passenger comfort isn`t a big issue. Maybe I`ll luck out & find a lady w/ her own bike.

After 500 miles on the road a whirlpool bath & cold beer sounds good to me.

I like to give myself a small reward for a long day: a steak dinner with a good beer followed by some ice cream. I sleep remembering the sights of the day.

As a veteran of long distance touring yourself, you sure know how to end a long and arduous day on the road. For me I am usually extremely beat and over joyed that we are at a hotel that has A/C, a bed, a hot shower, a TV,lol. Now my wife and who is my rock tends to have other well meaning plans. Me...I want to find the closest restaurant or even delivery for supper. She on the other hand wants to toodle around the newly esconced city du jour. Not doing that at the time. Maybe once I get a GPS I won't mind. I don't think nothing good comes from rambling around a unfamiliar large city in todays America.

I forget if you're married or single? I only mention that because I tour with my wife and its a double edge sword at times but the benefits of having her along far out weigh any of the not so desirable aspects. Its nice to have company, someone to talk to. And she basically sits on the back of the bike taking pictures and video's of things I don't initially get to see until we get home.

I'm all business at the end of the day. Unpack, reorganize the bike for the next day, wipe down and check the bike over and lastly review the upcoming 4-500 miles for the next day as far as distances between upcoming towns and gas stations. Most of the roads once out of the Northeast urban compact, especially the mid west and southwest are scary vacant for looooooooog stretchs at a time. Those spook me a pinch. You break down or have any mechanical failure you're screwed or hopefully very lucky?

My wife at the end of the days ride.....sauna,pool,treadmill:wtf:

Sometimes I like to camp by a lake where there's no people. I won't cook food there because it draws bears and wolves, but sitting by a campfire is like heaven to me. I have Sirius satelite radio on the bike and never feel alone. At night, I can listen to news or talk radio or even comedy shows.

Only thing I don't like about camping is not having a shower at night. Weird idiosyncrosy I have since going for weeks without a bath while in VietNam.

Luckily these days we have the means that a hotel is an option otherwise if alls we could afford is camping so be it we would camp but only as a last resort. We did in fact camp often back in the day because money was tight. And toured on a 1981 XLS Sportster Roadster, lol. Had the 3.6 gallon gas tank stock. Should have seen that bike 2 up with 2 sleeping bags and a tent. Looked like the Beverly Hillbillies.

I understand you can afford hotels but prefer camping. God bless. You're a better man then me. You must carry an inflatable mattress too,no? Don't most camping places usually have 25 cent shower deals...KOA anyways? I have a couple years worth of Woodall Camping directories and woodall CD directories just in case, you never know. I'm thinking when we head to AK I should take a tent and sleeping bags just in case?

Sorry but my campin days are over. I like to get a motel with a diecent bed and no bugs and a goood air conditioner and take a shower and go get something to eat and some Alkehol to drink and take my women back to the motel and relax and talk about what all we seen and did for the day. And what we would like to do tomorrow.

Hitting a decent hotel after a hard days ride is as memorable as it gets as far as I'm concerned.

yeah, motels are great. I still have the camping gear from my bicycle camping days but I remember how hard it was to get on and off the ground after a hard day of riding. Most campgrounds have showers but you gotta pump a lot of quarters in if you want a decent shower LOL.

I'm still laughing over this one CB. Yes sir, I like those things too.

But sometimes when you're riding in beautiful country with streams and lakes and no towns or people, well, it doesn't get any better than that. I have a single person tent to keep the bugs away, a thick sleeping bag and inflatable mattress to keep me comfortable.

I like to listen to talk radio at night for a couple hours, then listen to the sounds of the forest as I doze off. It doesn't cost anything for this type of travel, and you can go for a long time if all you're spending money on is showers, gas, and dinner. I know, women don't like to travel like this, and I'll probably never find one this way, but it's good to be alone too.

If you have a good woman who rides with you, you are a lucky man.

+1 Agree. She is definately a difference maker and when she's with me I tend to be more wary, vigilent and chess like cautious of my surroundings and actions.

You enjoy yourself sleeping out on the ground. Wake up all stiffand your nose stopped up and you hurting.
    If I can find a Motel 6 I can stay for 30.00 a nite.
Nice bed, good air and heat. CAn, shower, TV and I can go get Ice.
I've done camping all my life.
When I met my OL I was 34 she was 24, we took my 4x4 and did plenty of camping.
I live where deer run and crow and eagle flys. I see gators often.
Don't need to sleep out on the front pourch or in the yard to watch them and listen to them.
Enjoy the comfort of a bed. And my OL likes it better.
Now if you like campin and sleepin on the ground.
Old Chucktx pulls a camper behind his bike. Hes the one to talk to.

I haven't seen a $30 motel room in years. Are you getting special rates at Motel 6? I joined a club for staying at Comfort Inns a while back (stay in 3 Comfort Inns and 4th stay is free), but they never came through with the free nites they promised. Always some excuse why.

I thought about a camper trailer, but don't like having to deal with it everywhere you ride. If there are gators and snakes around, I'm not staying there!

Pulled into Del Rio 4 yrs ago. Was lookin for a room most was over 100.00
Seen a whataburger, and notised a Motel 6. I pulled in with the OL on back and a buddy from Lousiana. Sent the wife in and she asked , do you have any special rated for people over 60, They said yes.
She said what is a room for a senior. 30.00 a nite.
She said my Old Man wants a room
    They charged 10.00 for her.
I had 2 twin beds. A color Tv and a nice air conditioner and bathroom
Parked my bike outside the door and put a bike cover on it.
I like the factory HD alarm too.
