I found that the stock cable from the frame to the starter is long enough on its own to reach the battery easily. I only have to move it bout an inch and a half. So I removed the short one from the battery to the frame altogether and replaced it with a 10 gauge. Now I have one solid negative cable going to the starter. I'll see how that works before I buy a new starter.

Good, that's still a good idea even if you need
to get a new starter, check the volts at the green wire (trigger wire) coming
from the starter button to the solenoid make sure you don't have a big
drop when you press the button, since you have it disconnected it won't
start, you'll just be reading volts...

Not a lot to go wrong in the starter...solenoid/plunger...arcing build up,sandpaper or rebuild kit fixes that, worn brushes or clutch, replace..How's the battery,??
110,ooo and 15 yrs ,no shame if it needs replacement... it could be just the relay getting old...check the cheap stuff before shelling out the bux for a new one

I spent a little time trying to do this and found a 1.4 volt drop. But, I realized that the compression releases are on this same circuit so I will have to try it again after I pull the fuse from the comp releases.

Cold starting is usually pretty good but I noticed today that it didn't start as fast as it usually did and seems like it is turning over slower. The battery is only a year old so I think I'll start looking for a starter.

have you had the battery tested, it's free and a good idea before spending green.

1.4 isn't bad, but if you get a new starter get a new hd starter...

All Balls are good, but I ran a stock starter on my 124 for 10 years without any problems, when I jumped up to the larger starter the same issues you are having multiplied because you need even more power to crank it.

Do you know off hand what the power rating is for a stock 1998 starter motor? It's prolly in my manual somwares.

no I'd have to look it up.... but you have electronic comp releases right?

I had the same on my 124 wired into the starter wire circuit (otherwise how would they come on at the right time), some voltage drop is normal as the releases engage but at that point it's like turning the engine over with
no spark plugs, its easy, even with a high comp engine the releases fix that

All Balls makes a good starter, if you want something with a bit more juice
either way works, heck I think HD even sells a bigger starter...

I think the stock starter is 1.2Kw and they have a 1.4 in the P&A catalog.....

after 15 yrs,a new set of cables could help, wouldn't hurt anyway.... go with a heavier cable...it's a Nippondenso(Denso) starter...if new is expensive try your local starter shop for a rebuild kit or have them do it

Several people from the dealership think I should replace the starter clutch. That costs $120. New HD starter costs $320. Mine seems to be ok for now so im gunna wait a little while longer.

replaced the starter clutch twice on my Evo...1st one was a used one out of an '88 Toyota pick-up while I waited for the new one they(Starter Shop) ordered came in...The one they ordered was half the price of the same clutch if I ordered using the HD part number at the dealer...
I prefer repair over replace and using local shops over dealer when possible...Unless your starter shorts out and gets burned up...these are the most common wear items ...

Monday morning, tried to start er up and now I now for sure what a bad starter clutch sounds like. zzzziiiiiiiinngggg.... Luckily I was at home. Had to take the cage to work and I prolly won't get the starter clutch kit until Friday. I may take it off first and go to Toyota to see if they have this part cheaper like Lucifer says.

Yeah, take it off and take the whole starter or just the clutch and take it with you, might get a better deal at a starter shop

Good rule of thumb: repair if possible - replace only when necessary.
