I have a 97 Heritage FLSTC. When I hit the starter button often the engine will crank a few times and then it makes a loud "clank". I believe that it usually doesn't happen when the engine is cold. It seems like it occurs when the engine is warmed up; however, it is an intermittent occurrence. Has anyone experienced this problem, If so, let me know what the issue was and how you resolved it.

I need to clarify. When I hit the started button, the starter cranks a few times, not the engine. The "clank" happens before the engine starts to roll over.

I have to agree with Chucktx, sounnds like the starter drive (bendix), or the solenoid, (activates the starter drive). I would check it out ASAP, before you do damage to the ring gear on the flywheel. I would check all the gear teeth on the flywheel before putting the starter back on.

check the cables first make sure they are securely connected to the starter, frame and battery, old worn cables might need to be replaced.

check the battery it might be loosing some cranking power with the heat
    generated by the oil tank...

Lastly the starter items, the first two dont require surgery

I would start like HRK said & then move on to the rest , start with a jump if it kick's in like it should then it's the wires or battery , if not then check the bendex drive in the starter
