Could be the ethanol in the gas we get these days, try and additive and see if that helps, also on my bike I had the same experience with ping at speed when pulling hills, turns out my valve guide seal were leaking and deluding the fuel and or spark. I have since redone the top end with new valve seals and 95" pistons and rings. Haven't changed anything else and put 4,000 miles on in May with no pining. some of it was very warm weather.
May try another 1/8-1/4 turn on the pilot screw.

Do you use the cvp needle?

Yes, I had the sportster needle when it was pinging, and just changed to Ken's needle when I did the rebuild. They are pretty much the same thing. I think it was the seaping vavle guides that was causing the problem. I had an older kit from CV Performance and bought a new one and exchanged all the parts just before I rebuild the top end.
I'd try some gas additive and see if that helps.

What octane gas are running??? If you are getting pining you could try upping the octane and see if that helps... Just a thought.....

I would also add that if you are at full throttle the circuit should be past the needle's range and relying only on the main jet.

Hey Ben, it sounds like you are almost back to normal so I wonder, have you recently done a tune-up? Maybe it's time for new plugs, air filter, etc. That might get you back to the performance youre used to.
Kenfuzed, do you have experience with the Thunderjet valves for S&S carbs? Are they worth the money? How do they affect performance?
