Synthetic Oils Amsoil or HD or

    He tries to provide good info then adds totally bogus, unsubstantiated, myth perpetuating b.s.

    He has no empirical data to back his statements. No proof to show and like I said, find a majority of votes for a dino oil in a room of professional engine builders. Ain't gonna happen.

    I agree. The only way your gonna have bearing skate is from a poorly installed bearing or a bearing that is not a prefered application. You can't put in a bearing with a C2 clearance when it calls for a C1 clearance and 999,999,999 bearings out of a million are going to made to specs. The synthetic has a more consistant base particles and can provide a more even coat. It will run cooler in some applications but not all of them. I have had racing builds that would not seat the rings with synthetic, but that was 15 yrs ago. I still run mineral during the breakin period just because I'm use to it. I do know that Royal Purple has alot more cleaning properties than other oils, but you should change it more often also due to this. If I got a bike that was "gunked up" I would run the RP in it and change the filter several times unless I was going to go into the engine. I use Amsoil, but RP will clean up a high milage engine.

    Thanks for the update CD and HRK, I looked back through this thread and couldn't find it (the website reference), so thanks for keeping me in the loop. I get easily confused.....of course that ain't hard to do anyhow....

    BTW, I prefer, and do, run syn in all my vehicles and bike. FWIW

    I Have Been Using Amsoil In The Bike Since I Bought It. I Mean The First Time I Took Out The Hd Oil. I Am Told That Harley Oil Is Citco Oil. I Wouldnt Use That Oil In My Lawn More. Crude Oil Contains A Lot Of Wax, Dont Want That In My Engine.

    has anyone seen or have the white film on the dipstick? Reminds me of the old air cooled vw's with detergent oil. Is this normal fo rharley's? :cool: :eek:

    The last time I saw white on a dipstick was the result of water in the oil. This was in a cage, not a bike and I had blown a head gasket, not really sure if this applies in this case....:confused:

    Are you talking about a white chalky dry substance on the dipstick or a milky color as moisture in the oil.

    its a mikly whote color, consistancy of lithium grease. It cannot be water bike is garaged and air cooled. Never been in rain,. 300 miles

    Did you wash it & the dipstick not pushed in all the way ?, I would change it & flush it somehow

    it can be water due to condinsate. hot and cold in a metal tank will create water, and the fact that there is only 300 miles on the bike indicates it is not ridden enough to burn the water off. the oil temps need to get to 220 to remove the water that normally accumilates in the oil....hope this helps:)
    i would change the oil, start the bike and ride it about 100 miles to get it to operating temp....then check again, the white should be gone.....:D

    Yep, condensation, if it was warm out, you could take it for a long drive and get it really good and warmed up and I bet most of it would be gone, even on my work pickup, only goes 8 miles two times aday I have that same white grease in my filler cap when I change oil, just never gets hot enough to burn it all out, If it bothers you, change it , otherwise just go drive it and get it warmed up.

    Thanks for the responses. I am changing the oil, i just went thru a ton of fuel from a bad needle float valve. The bike sat for 3 years, so that is fixed, i will do the change and ride it. Providing it is warm enough. Burrrrrrrr up here now!

    Being new to the forum, I made the mistake of reading this thread.........lol I have heard all the for's and against on oil before.

    One comment I agree with is, "new oil is the best oil" so whatever you use, change it when required or sooner if you want to.

    shell oil

    Shell Advance oil is a Europe only oil that is recommended by Ducati. No pricing in this Country because you can't buy it here.
