I would have thought in Texas propane would be cheap since it is close to oilfield drilling.

Yes the tankless heaters work fine, but I thought you were looking for a more economical way to heat. Ultra's 99 cents /gal is a third of what propane costs here.

AKA on demand water heater...gas works great, lp or natural. however, you will NEVER be happy with electric. water temperature fluctuates too much as banks of heat kick in. i have installed dozens of both types, and customers using electric never stop complaining. standard faucet delivers 1 gpm, tub valves deliver 2.5 gpm. no complaints about the sinks, just the showers. you also have to consider the electrical requirements. a 10kw electric will never handle a regular household. and when you go to 15kw-20kw, you are going to be lucky if you have the extra capacity in your panel. when doing electric load calc's on a typical 1800-2000 sq. ft., if you have a heat pump ( and i believe you do), electric range and dryer...guess what...you need a 400 amp service in your house. if you try using split breakers to make enough room in your 200 amp panel you are just tempting the sparks to start flying.

sorry cardboard...but you could add a circulating pump to your existing system, and insulate the hot water pipes. or go with propane for the on demand. the cost of operating the water heater on lp is not that bad. your neighbors probably use lp for their furnace as well as hot water...that would be costly.

Yea when I do home inspections I never find electric on-demand hot water heaters. Don't even find that many on-demand gas units either. Mostly gas fired 40 gal or 50 gal electric hot water heaters. Why is gas units smaller, simple they recover faster than electric and thus are more economical to operate.

comparing your neighbor with whole house propane to a single LP tankless hot water heater isn't apples to apples.

tankless LP will use very little LP, and if the electricity is out for some reason you'll have hot water, when everyone else wont

I don't know that much about tankless gas heaters, but I would be surprised if they didn't have electrical to them for ignition parts. Or maybe they have a standing pilot?

Years ago I installed supplemental water heaters that used the hot gas line off your a/c unit to heat water...they didn't go over to well though, haven't seen any in years and don't think they make them anymore.

The ones I've seen have electricity for ignition. Even all the standard 40 gal gas water heaters I see now have electric ignition.

Tankless electric is fine, at least you're not heating a boiler of water all day
It might not be as efficient as LP but it will do what you want, get one large enough
to take care of your needs.

You might find you can't wash your arse and clean the dishes at the same time
and have hot water at both....
