Most don't allow a new gun to be test fired unless it was purchased. Once fired and you don't like it then it becomes a used gun. If you know what you really want and can find one now I would buy it. But, best to price shop as things have gone up in price at different LGS. Good luck with it and hope you find the right one for you.

Kimbers are the higher end 1911
lot of folks swear by them, you pay for the name
it used to be lower production higher quality but
    they have increased production,

Sig's 1911's rival them now, and there are a lot
more options, in fact Kimbers former boss now
runs Sig USA. Probably why the 1911 line has
    grown at Sig.

There are as good models that you can get if you want
a full size rugers new 1911 is good, Springfield makes good 1911
the Range Officer or Loaded is a very good choice

All are good, all are basically 1911's find the one you like
they will all fit the same.

Now if you want to go big time, Ed Brown, Les Baer, Wilson Combat or
Nighthawk Customs are hand made low volume high quality 1911's

You can tell the difference between production and custom easily.

Rugers are extremely well made. I have a Ruger 1911 and a Sig 1911 3 inch barrel and to tell you the truth I can get better grouping with the Ruger. Now, Ruger is making a smaller version called the Commander. I've seen one and they are very nice and in high demand. I have to tell you if I was looking for a 1911 in a smaller size I would seriously check out the Ruger. They are stainless steel and Ruger has a great selection of grips for them. Here are a few pics of the standard Ruger and the new Ruger Commander. :)

The price of the Kimber's has come down some in the last year. At my LGS he has 4 different models right now between $800- $900 and 2 years ago they would have been around $1100-1200. They are still pricey but are very nice guns, they have no slop in the slides like some cheaper 1911's.

Kimber started out making guns (rifles) in Clackamas Oregon and became known as a very well made rifle. The original owners split up and I believe the new owners took it to New York or somewhere back east. That is where they started making 1911 pistols.
My 1911 Ruger is made in Prescott AZ has no slop in the slide and is very accurate as I previously mentioned. It shoots more accurate than I can hold it.
When I bought mine over a year ago I picked it up for $639.00 now they are from what I have heard on the Ruger forum are selling for over $700.00.

I can tell you that the Kimber 1911's haven't come down in price at all. Brand new ones are still going for about $1400. I like how this gun feels in the hand way better then the Springfield 1911 Champion and that felt really good. For a used gun, $900 is still plenty.

Yep, I looked them up last night and they are now in New Jersey. They were in Yonkers, New York for a little bit. It sounds like the guy in Oregon embezzled $10 million and is now in prison. From having that piece in my hand I can vouch that the Kimber was a very tight piece, no slop in the slide at all. In fact, they wre so tight that it was difficult to return the slide. Beautiful piece that is for sure. Hot Rider really likes this one too so that makes a difference. I am still a little ways off from buying one, but soon will have one.:D

The dude I bought one of my XDm 3.8 compact from had the wilson combat.
Don't care to carry a pistol that expensive
    They don't shoot any better.
A carry pistol ain't for match grade shooting. Its for personal protection.

Well, I took Hot Rider to my favorite outfitter and I showed her an alternative to the Kimber. What I showed her was the Bersa Thunder .45 ACP. I surprised by her reaction and she liked the gun a lot. So, we put some money down on it and now time to get the purchase permit. I was really shocked that she said go ahead and get it now. I would have been fine to wait till after my bike was done but said we can do it now. I didn't wait. I am so stoked! I decided on this Bersa mainly for its safety features that it possess and of course it is compact for a good carry weapon as well. A buddy of mine offered a really good price on ammo that he has a surplus of so I am going to see how the Bersa likes it. When the piece is in my hands I will post a pic.

Good for you JB glad you found one you like.

CB you have no idea what you are talking about
Wilson Combats are very good defensive pistols
and they have competition models as well with a
guaranteed 1/2 inch group at 50 yards.

No production meets that, none, and
for defense they are still very reliable and accurate

If you have the coin you can carry them, some folks
do, get the guy to let you shoot that gun...
I have, they are amazingly good..

HRK, I would have to say that the XDM line of pistols shoots very fantastic groups. The thing that I have found with the 1911 pistols is the fantastic triggers. My Ruger ain't no Wilson but feel its better than the Bersa. To me the Bersa is kind of homly looking. Sorry JB I have just always felt that way as I have always felt the small 1911s are extremely accurate and nice looking. Just personal preference. But for carry I'll take my XDS 45 or my S&W Shield, light weight and easy to conceal.

Thanks, in about three months I will have another one I can about promise you that. I had to go with something that is as safe as it possibly can be. The reason for this is because I have small children in my home all the time and my youngest likes to come snooping in my room when I am sleeping. Of course I will have it locked up but I just want to sure as well. Safety IS ALL OF OURS RESPONSIBILITY!!! I really like how the Bersa fits, it is compact and really light.

Just a question, but is $25 for a box of 100 45 ACP cast ammo a good deal????

Price is good. But be advised, Hot loaded cast lead will foul your barrel. Not a real problem but requires cleaning much more often.
