Sorry about your tranny problems Josh, and I didn't mean to sound like a smart ass on shovels. I respect the guy who keeps his machine for many years and does all his own work to keep it on the road.

I once got a job in a factory many years ago because I rode my old Harley to the interview. The guy said "If you can keep that bike on the road, I know you can fix anything." Ain't that the truth.

Man, that would be a cool way to land a job. I might have to try that soon . . . as I might be needing one.

Well, this thread started as a leak problem and has evolved into replacing the clutch pushrod, oil slinger, throwout bearing & races, in short, a throwout bearing kit - and a new o-ring on the kicker shaft to hopefully repair the original problem. Ordered the kit today from J&P. Tattoo had ordered me one of those heavy duty throwout bearings, but I found out that it wasn't compatable with my pushrod. I'm hoping I will be able to get everything good by the time I depart for Ohio, which is on June 29th.

Got a fairly new laptop today (this one actually has a mouse) and I am still trying to figure some things out - like posting pictures. (Here we go again):banghead:

Today I installed the new throwout bearing kit, got the cover back on, ran some cheap oil thru the tranny and drained it. Nuthin came out but oil - clean oil. Then poured in 20 oz. of gear oil & 1 oz. of Zmax. Changed the motor oil, too, and added 5 oz. of Zmax to the oil tank. Tomorrow I'm going for a test ride . . . .

BTW, the "magnetic" drain plug I ordered wasn't magnetic at all, although the packaging said it was. And the thread count was wrong, too (20 TPI). The add said it was a tranny drain plug, but they sent me an enclosed primary one. I searched online and found a way to magnetize my drain plug . . . will try that tonight.

For some reason, the plug wouldn't magnetize. So I put it back in as is. I have read that there are even some iron metals that won't magnetize. My drain plug is 1/2 x 13 TPI, and has a hole in the middle. Gonna try and find some round rare earth magnets and epoxy one in the hole. Might have to drill - might not. What do you guys think of that idea? - got it from the shovel forum.

First, however, I'm going to put some miles on the the ol' thang and when I change the gear oil again, say next week, I'll fix the plug.

Thank Alex! I'm glad to hear you appreciate that. I think a true "Biker" knows everything about how his (or her, hi Gina) machine works and is able to fix it.

I've burried plenty of Evo's with my Shovel.
It ain't easy kick starting a 93" shovel but it's worth the effort. :)

I personally would not put anything but oil in my motor and tranny. As far as using a magnetic drain plug in the tranny..... If you have metal pieces floating around in your tranny, that magnet ain't gonna solve your problem. That's just my opinion.
The primary is different 'cause there's a clutch in there that will throw off friction material that the magnet will catch.

Heh-heh . . . old is a state of mind - pay it no mind!
Took my test ride today and everything went as planned. Tranny shifts smoother than it ever has - was very pleased with the results. No leaks anywhere and that is a milestone, boys. Never heard of a shovel that doesn't leak somewhere.
Reckon the beast is as ready as it'll ever be for my upcoming trip.:D

Took the ol' girl out for a longer ride today and same fantastic results. Downshifts very smooth, a little bit of clunk upshifting into 3rd - more like a click than a clunk. Motor just putts along. No leaks anywhere. I suppose you can't ask for more than that out of a 35 year old motorcycle. I feel confident now taking it up to Ohio in 2 weeks.

Did we finally get it right? I hope so, boys . . .
