Could be good news if you wanted to go bigger or could be bad news if you wanted to save all the money for the 117". Does this mean you are building 2 engines for Christmas?

21 037.jpg Nice to have the expendable cash for a project like this. I know the feeling once somthing like this gets into your blood. Thats how I was with the Pan. I was young, had a young family but piece by piece as time and money allowed I finally completed what I considered my dream project. I rode that puppy for over 25 years and then passed it on to a much younger and enthusiastic friend/rider in Arizona.
Heres the new happy owner Woody. And I'm sure the bike is liking Arizona better than New Hampshire too:

So the circlip came out and was the likely cause of the noise as it was chewed up? Guess the cyls/heads coming off was the right choice over the cam bushing removal. Good job. Thanks for the pics along the way, too.

BaggerPaul can vouch, when I heard the noise for the very first time I suspected piston slop of some kind. Weird thing us that I was still getting 42 mpg as ND it was not smoking either. Strange.

Usually, smoking comes only from oil coming into cylinders from the top (valve guides).

I had also mentioned valve guide possibilities as a potential problem.

Gumba there is a lot of cylinder wall missing how the rings were sealing is amazing. Should have been smoking like a diesel truck.

No I guess it is time to start the planning stage of the new engine but I will keep this thread going as I do have the engine removal yet to perform.

I just had to mention that I was also correct when I said that the noise that I was hearing was from the front cylinder. :p

On BaggerPaul 's advice, I am going to take the cylinder and piston over to Derek and show him what had happened. He is the one that put this thing together. I wonder what his reaction will be? Lol. I am not blaming him in anyway, but curious. Lol.

Good idea ....I'm sure he'd like to know about a failure whether it was a cir-clip failure or installation fubar....no way to tell which happened but after this he'll probably make absolutely sure the clip is home before sliding the jug on....
