    anything can fail,

what does the inside lip of the piston retaining wall
where the clip sat look like, did the clip fail or the side of the piston fail, or was the clip never seated fully.

Maybe not...but he's gotta find it....hopefully it's 1 or 2 pieces sitting in the bottom of the case...

Not very often....but it's one of the 3 things HRK said....There may be signs of what went wrong and how the clip coming out started....

Judging by the picture in post 238, it looks to me that clip came loose and got hung up. Look at the top of the pin landing, you can see that there is damage there, however, the major damage to the piston is below the pin and is gouged severely. Did it just break? No, I do not think so.

Well, I hope you don't find any other damage caused by the clip.

I agree. Believe it or not I am pretty optimistic that it will be minimal. Damaged but minimal.

Hopefully this weekend I will be able to get started on tearing the remaining pieces off of the Sportster and get it out of the frame. Lots of work to be done, but it is really only beginning.

Finally I was able to make some progress on tearing down the Sportster. Cleaned up a bit by getting parts and tools out of the way. First thing I went after was the pinion gear and oil pump. The SM says that the pump comes out easily but there a bunch of wires in the way. There is a bolt that is right up against the case and the outer Frame rail makes it difficult to get at. Hey, I just thought of something. Brb

Ok, what I thought of is using a different tool to get in between the frame and the case. What I used was a ball end Allen and used a 3/8" wrench for leverage to break it loose. I was able to get the pump out.

Here are some pictures of the oiling system.

First will be of the tool that I needed to assist with keeping the pinion gear still so I could break it loose. Second is the pinion gear. Third is the oil drive gear.
