Just talking about building this one up. Seen it happen to, to many guys.

I would like to see Harley build a SE Sportster with the 110 motor. Now that would be a stock hotrod.

Yeah that would be cool. The Sportster is going to in my opinion, the best in the business in the Sportster world. There will be no other hands involved in this build. Of course I am basing my opinion off pure reputation and so far, they haven't disappointed.

Going to an 88 c.i with this engine isn't really stretching its limits all that much. Believe it or not, the cases aren't even being machined all that much. It uses stock wheels, stock rod length, better bearings, stock valve sizes, and stronger springs. There are people on HTT that build 1250 cc Sportsters more powerful than what my 88 will be. Patients is the key that I have found. Scrutinize everything. ;)

Well than you should be OK then.
I don't fit in a Sporster, to small for my height and big frame. :)
Even my Springer is a bit small but I just love the look of that bike. Looking forward to the finished pictures.

Hard to say about the cir-clip that gave out, either the side of the piston
wall where it held it gave out, or the clip wasn't seated 100% and finally
    worked out.

Really doesn't matter does it, because it's done it's damage.

    As they say shidt happens..

Got back into the garage for further tear down. One thing that I noticed that was significantly different then last time was the amount of effort that it took to break the comp. nut loose. Last time it took very little effort, this time I had to use the impact to break it loose.

Went to start taking the shifter assembly apart when I happened to notice that there is a strange "bowed retaining ring on a detent plate. Have never seen one like this so I stopped. Not sure if this is an automatic replacement part or what?

Looks like a combination of wavy washer/circlip. I would likely not reuse same one at reassembly as tension on shaft may have changed. Does manual show it?

Yes. But it doesn't say if it is throwaway or not. But I agree with you on this.

Well I have the transmission out and there isn't much there that looks like it is a problem. Here are a few pictures.

I cleaned it up, but yes, it wasn't bad at all.

Now with the transmission out, this weekend should be the weekend that the engine comes out. Just need to pull the starter, rotor, oil tank and battery. Not much.

I was being a bit facetious, Johnny. No offense meant. I remember the headaches my shovel gave me. Wish I could be up there helping you out; I'm also good at offering encouragement and making beer and parts runs.

No. But I am nearly done now. Making a run to get some parts ordered. Engine will be ready for removal tonight.
