    Cleaning, Polishing, Waxing, and Sealing

    Hello,

    Cleaning:

I detail bikes on the side and us S100 Total cycle cleaner to wash and degrease the bike. There are two schools of thought on cleaning a bike; those that use water, and those that use a chemical wash. If you’re interested in finding out more on the no wash method I would recommend checking out my friend Scott's site chopperdetailing.com. Additionally, I also use a product called Pimp Stixx which is basically a cleaning kit for a bike along with plenty of Micro fiber towels. Be careful not to drop the towel on the ground as it will grab everything it comes in contact with includeing sand and grit. As a precautionary measure, all the hand tools I use are coated to include the hose nozzle to ensure I don’t ding or scratch the paint if I drop the them. When it comes to cleaning the bike, in my opinion, you can't go wrong using the S100 cleaning products. I use a combination of several products to include Menzerna, Flitz all metal cleaner/Polish, Blingmaster's Aluminator to make polished aluminum look like chrome, and Pinnacle leather treatment kits on the bikes I service.

    Polishing and sealing:

I use the Menzerna Intenssive polish and Final polish as described on Hawg-Wash -- Motorcycle Detailing Supplies, Motorcycle Care, How to detail a Hawg. This is a great product gets great comments from the owners I work with on a regular basis. I follow up with Menzerna FMJ paint sealant for the Tins along with a coat of Carnauba wax to give an extra enhanced shine and sparkle. The carnauba wax will wear off completely after 90 days but the FMJ will last for six months. Chrome surfaces get a touch of Blue Job or Flitz depending on the level of neglect they have endured. I use the S100 Corrosion Protectant to coat the pipes. Be sure to apply the pray to a damp rag and wipe it on the chrome. If you pray it directly on the chrome you will be scrubbing for days!!

That's my 2 cents worth. I can go on but I will keep this point short this go around. If anyone is interested I can go into more detail in a private emailing.

thanks renagde1............sounds llike you have a system. what would a ballpark figure be for detailing a electra glide standard. no extra stuff added to the bike, and no extra chrome. bike would be on the dirty side....washed once a month and not really any detailing.......im just curious...not gonna send it to you.....:D

Make sure that you're using the right rag/pad on your buffer, and that there is NO dirt in the rag/pad. You should wash the rag and let it air dry up off the ground and away from ALL dirt. If the rag touches the ground throw it in the wash and get a new rag. Even the smallest amount of dirt will leave swirl marks.

Also, claybarring the paint will help.

    Clay barring and Grit

    Hello

Painted surfaces pick get coated with various pollutants, break dust rail dust and industrial fall out. The particles get imbedded into the surface of your paint. The contaminated surface dulls and diffuses the shine. Claying is the process of lubricating a lump of detailer’s clay and whipping it across the surface of your tank to remove the unwanted particle. You would then follow up with a polishing compound to get the tank or tins the way you want them to shine before you seal or cover the finished product with wax or sealant. Just waxing a painted surface does not help improve the shine. You have to polish or burnish the surface to get the surface as smooth as possible to remove the surface contamination. This process is what makes a surface shine to the max.

I do not use power or electric tools on the bikes a I detail but there have been times where such a procedure would remove a scuff mark in the clear coat or deep swirl marks. The Menzerna I mentioned will work with either the hand or electric dual action buffer but as one reader wrote, Make sure the pads are dirt Free!? The last thing you want to do is etch your clear coat with sand particle on the pad! This is an area I hope to get into this summer as I want to get into restoration and improving bikes ranging from late model to the current versions out on the streets today.

People have told me that my bike looks like crap a few times....dirty, road grime, bugs...... I just explain to them that I am a RIDER.....that means that if the weather is nice enuf to wash/wax the bike, then it is nice enuf to be riding.....and if I am not riding, I am spending time with the family doing other stuff...therefore, not washing/waxing the bike.....ONCE in a while, I do get to it, but not always the highest priority
