Won't start without a bung

    Actually about 5 gallons of gas and let soak then apply entire book of matches lit!!!...lol....I will bring the hotdogs and roaster sticks!!

    didn't know Home Depot sold gas !!!!!!!!:D



    I cleaned the sliders............ and............. 1 & 4 still ain't firing
    I'm gonna take a look at the ignition advancer in the next few days
    (may as well rip the carbs out and re-clean them just to be sure)

    been a while but don't you have two coils?

    switch them, see if the problem moves to 2,3 on the no fire...

    LOL meant it had been a while since I messed with the ricers

    I have a friend whos neighbor resto'd those bikes from that period

    Had a 900 out there with 4 cyl and I recal it having two coils and a similar problem..

    OK i tried changing the coils round
    (just the two wires that connect onto each coil) (that's right ain't it ???)

    Wouldn't start, got some REALLY BIG backfires though !!
    so i put them back how they were.

    I then took plug #1 out to check spark (fine)
    same with #4 (spark fine)
    i then took #2 plug out, spark fine
    Left #2 out and also took #3 out and started it up ......... with # 1 and 4 in
    The bike started but wouldn't idle very well, so i put all plugs back in and left the wires off plugs #2,3 Same result, the bike starts up but doesn't tick over well and only revs to about 3000rpm

    So this means cylinders 1 and 4 must be firing (doesn't it ????)
    which makes me think this is a carb/fuel problem

    any thoughts
    apart from the obvious.....I HAVE TOO MANY CYLINDERS ON MY BIKE !!!!:roflmao:

    Air,spark,fuel and compression. If you got all 4 it should run for ya. I don't wanna get ya runnin in circles but if any of the cyl's don't have any 1 of the 4 it won't run.You're either missing one(or more) or not getting enuf of one to run right. Did you do a compression test?:devil:

    No i haven't done a compression test
    (other than start the bike without each of the plugs in, and it's pumpin out air each time in my face !!
    so not a very in depth test !!!

    I don't really know how to do a comp test

    pull all the plugs, put your thumb over the hole, spin the engine with the starter. if blows the thumb off the hole it probably has enough compression to run. not an absolute test, but good enough to let ya know that all thevalves and rings are working correctly................:)

    You can get a cheap compression tester at any parts store.

    I guess I should have said switch the coils so that the trigger wires are on the switched coil in the right place

    Ie Move Right coil to left side, but put other plug wires on it and change out the trigger/ignition wires.

    It probably wouldn't run because it was firing the wrong cyl at the wrong time.

    Check compression
    Check spark
    check for fuel

    Ok I have compression, I have spark
    So the only thing left at the moment to check is for a fuel starvation in carbs 1 &4

    i guess i've just been looking for an excuse NOT to have to get the carbs out and clean em AGAIN :banghead:

    I'll let you know when i've cleaned them
    (i'm working on a busted pool filter at the moment, watching my pool get greener by the second !!!!)

    Living in FL and having a year long money eating pool I can give you a hint to help reduce the costs and the green problem.

    Go to the pool store they should have a floating chlorine dispenser for tablets

    You load it and toss in the pool it will chlorinate 24/7 unlike the filter based cartridge that works in line. That requires you to run the filter/pump longer.

    The floating cartridge will eliminate the problem of loss of power, filter busting, pump breaking etc.

    Good luck on the bike.

    well ....
    number 1.... I got the filter housing for my pool done (JB weld and marine adhesive/sealant) drying out as i type !! fingers crossed on that one !


    and Number 2 ...... tossed half a can of seafoam and a bit more gas in the bike today and left it running for 10-15 mins and
    #1 quite/very warm
    #2 HOT
    #3 HOT
    #4 HOT

    so i guess leavin it to run longer than i have been and seafoam might well blast the ****e out of the carbs ????

    can too much seafoam harm the engine ?

    Looks promising:) No, it won't hurt the engine when using it as a fuel additive, read the can and it'll tell ya how many litres/gallons one can will treat and add accordingly.
    I first heard about the stuff on this forum, I think it can also be added to the oil just before you're ready to change it too.
