I am just looking for opinions here before I rip the beast apart. I am going to convert my 03 883 to a 1200 this winter. I am looking for opinions on conversion options. Here is what I have to put on:
Buell S1 heads
SE bolt in cams
SE ignition
883 jugs (extra set to be bored)
Stock 1200 pistons which I will probably not use because of weight. Thinking about Weisco flat tops.
Anyhow, I am not against just doing the Weisco 883-1200 dished top piston conversion and keeping my 883 heads either. I can Ebay the Buell heads if I don't use them. I am just looking for opinions before I start. I am not a speed demon, and would like something that stays reliable, but pulls good. Scott

Here is another issue with my 03 883. My speedo works fine all the time, however if I stop to fuel up, when I start up the speedo reads slow. If I then stop, turn the ignition off, re-start, the speedo reads true again. If I stop for fuel and turn the ignition key to acc only to turn the engine off but keep the speedo powered up, it is ok. If I fuel up then cycle the ignition twice before starting, the speedo is ok. I always let it boot up in acc before turning the key to run. Also if the bike sits for say 10 minutes before starting the speedo reads true. It is just the quick gas up stops that affect it. I have changed the speedo head and cleaned the speed sensor. I have checked all the connections etc. Ideas??
Cheers, Scott

I have an 03 883, it runs excellent apart from one annoying glitch. When I am traveling at a good speed, say 70 mph or even sometimes under heavy acceleration there is a like a blip of hesitation or miss even that feels almost like you pulled the clutch in slightly and quickly but without the revs. It will do it maybe 3 times and then it is fine for a long while. Sometimes it never happens at all. It can be on a full tank, half tank, near empty tank. I have replaced the plugs and wires. The engine has a stage 1 kit in it with 45 pilot, 170 main, SE slip ons and SE/KN air cleaner. I get great mileage and it never lets me down, but I would like to track down this glitch. Bike has 27K Kms on it. I am going to be doing a 1200 conversion to it soon and I have a SE ignition waiting to go in,...

I've got an early Shovel, that I'm re-working the pistons and cylinders (wrist pin came loose in 1 piston). I'm thinking about the JIMS top end oiling kit to up-grade my valve train, it includes roller rockers, new tappets, tappet blocks, and pushrods. It oils the rockers the same way the EVO does and you remove the external oil lines to the top end. It's a little pricey at over $900 from Direct Parts Inc. Has anyone had any experience with this kit and is the up-grade worthwhile? I'd probably go ahead with a new cam also. This is a stock engine and not a hot rod at all, but I'm thinking it would make it last longer.
