As noted in this forum, the '06 FXST line will have 200 mm rear tires vs the old 150 mm. At Laconia this year I saw some massive rubber on some Jesse James custom bikes. In fact just about every custom bike exhibitor there had gone with this format. Other than appearance, is there a functional reason for going to a wider tire? I understand the obvious applications for a drag bike, but is there any advantage for a street bike? Logic indicates more expensive tire replacement and a loss of gas mileage due to increased friction and unsprung weight. Is there an offset in stability and traction control? Cornering? Just wondering what the intended payoff is.

Question, on my 1977 FLH 1200 4spd, w/spoked wheels. From stock I thought 150/90 16 rear and 120/90 front. I want to replace the tires, and would like to put the biggest tires down without screwing up the performance and handling of the bike. Was thinking someone could steer me in the right direction. I have been told many different things. I know that this is an area that most would rather not go. Thanks for the help, I look forward to your opinion. bluejay864

I have a 74 shovel.I recently put an adjustable rake triple tree on it. After about 5000 miles the lower legs seemed to freeze up. I haven't tore it apart yet, but I have a theory as to what happened. When I put the new triple tree.on it I kicked it out 6 degrees. I think that the wear pattern was established for the stock rake on the bushings. When I changed the rake, I also changed the wear pattern. Seeing how I have a lot of miles on the lowers I think I put the bushing to tube in a bind. I'm going to be tearing it apart in the near future. Luckily I have another bike to ride while I work on my shovel. I would like to know if my theory makes sense. I would like to hear about any other theories. anybody has. Thanks to anyone that responds in advance.
