i have an 84' softail that needs new shocks. new ones are 300-500 bucks. i found some at a swap meet that were for a 89 up softail for really cheap. what is the difference in those and the 84-88 shocks? (besides the resevoirs) can you make em' work? something must be different(i think) because anywhere that sells softail shocks has different listings 84-88, and 89-99, and 2000 up. know anyone who's done this? any ideas?
can you help a poor guy save a buck?

My new V&H big shot longs,PCIII, and my Ness super sucker where on my door today when I got off work
I put my exhaust on first since I figured this would be the hardest part. This was alot easier then I though it would be. The part that took the longest on this step of the job was running to the store to by a new 45 hex wrench since mine was stripped out. In total this part took about 2.5 hours.
Second step was the Super sucker. This was a pcs of cake.... took about 20-30 minutes
Third was the PCIII, This took me a little longer then it should of but was still very easy..... took about 30-45 minutes.
To sum it up... If anyone out there is thinking about doing this upgrade themselves....I would say go for it. It took about 3.5-4 hours and was well worth the money. My Bike used...

Okay, I have in the past re-jetted my own carbs on past Harley's. Easy task, huge plus in performance, very little money spent, etc, etc - I'm all for it and recommend it to anyone with a stock carbed bike. Now, I have a brand new Softail Standard with fuel injection. Just picked it up last Saturday. Very pleased with how smooth it runs, but the sound level sucks! I already have the V&H Straight shots and Arlen Ness Big Sucker Air Cleaner. They are still boxed. Before installing these, I gather a PC III should be my next move. Couple Questions: 1) When I order this, do I tell the salesman what my bike is, what my exhaust is, what my air cleaner is and will the PC III already be programmed for this combo? Or, is it basically "blank", and I'll need to download the appropriate map...

After reading the few stories of being almost ran over by a cars or SUV's I was sitting here thinking that it is not always the stupid drivers of SUV's or car but the bolt of lighting that I encountered on June 14, 1998. While riding back from the 95th anniversary of Harley Davidson, me and two other friends were just 120 from home. (we had traveled from Rock Springs Wyo. to Milwaukee Wisconsin.) We had been riding in rain, starting around the middle of Nebraska. We got into Cheyenne Wyo, and had dinner. Me and Ron had left our helmets on while Dave L. decided to pack his away, (Me and Ron didn't want to have to unpack our T-bag to put the helmets away, Nebraska has the helmet law while Wyo. does not). So off we went, now understand that it had been raining and lightning all day, but I...
