This year has been the most uneventful summer for me as far as riding is concerned. Here we are in the middle of July and JohnnyBiker hasn't even clocked 1000 miles. As the summer rolls on and I am looking at the upcoming season ( or what's left of it) I have come to peace with the fact that I will probably not break the 1000 mile mark. Weird thing is though, I am ok with that.

During my latest cross-country run I usually spent 10 or more hours - often 12-14 - each riding day in the saddle. I'd get mentally and physically exhausted, and when I'd realize it I had one "trick" to re-energize: grab the 'grips and hit the throttle....briefly (didn't need law problems). The joy of riding would fire me back up for another few miles. Us riders know that the ride is the reason for the trip.
Weather can make riding less fun. Over 100 or less than 50 degrees and the ride becomes more of a challenge. I've ridden in temps from 9 degrees to 116, and those were when I actually/accurately knew the official temps. The 116 required a water bottle to spray on me as well as drink - the 9 was just a poor decision...frostbite took a layer of skin that morning, and even that...

I just bought a 2008 Hayabusa with only 900 miles on it. I drove it home from the dealership where it had been kept inside. Then had to leave it outside for the first night and following day while I was at work. When I got off work that same day I took it riding and noticed gas was leaking from under the bike in a few places. But when I stopped riding and set still the leak stopped after a few minutes. Why is the bike leaking gas?

Having just completed another multi-week ride, I've finally figured out what I think are my essential items to bring on cross-country rides for Spring through Fall. All items INCLUDE what I'm wearing. So here goes:
Clothing
- 2 Helmets: 1 full face, 1 half shell
- 1 Heavy Leather biker jacket
- 1 Boots (H-D ones that are very walkable and have vent zippers)
- 1 Leather chaps
- 1 Heavy Leather biker vest
- 1 "Hoodie"
- 4 Glove pairs: 1 Heavy Gauntlet, 1 deerskin, 1 rain, 1 half-finger
- 1 Rain suit (pants/jacket)
- 5 Shirts: 1 long sleeve, 2 short sleeve, 1 no sleeve, one collared dress shirt that can handle abuse.
- 2 pair Pants (1 heavy denim, one lighter fabric jeans)
- 4 pair socks: 1 Heavy weight, 3 medium
- 5 pair drawers: 1 long, 4 boxer/brief
- 1 Swim trunks (with pocket)
